A Note for Teachers

  • About the text: In her TED Talk “A Better Way to Talk about Love” by Mandy Len Catron (TED), Catron argues that we talk about love in violent, unhealthy, and traumatic ways and these ways fundamentally change how we perceive love, how we experience love, and what we expect from love. The two key metaphors that she uses to drive this argument home are "falling in love" and "love as madness." She also shares her personal experience of young love and heartbreak to highlight that because she expected love to be "powerful" and "painful," she experienced just that, and rather unhealthily. Catron ends her talk by suggesting that we talk about love as a "collaborative work of art," something that we have control over and create rather than something that we sit and let happen to us uncontrollably.
  • Purpose of lesson: It is important that students walk away from this lesson understanding that madness is powerlessness and instability. It is also uncontrollable, damaging, and unhealthy.
