A Note for Teachers


  • Big ideas of the text: Levee’s monologue and confession about his past illuminates the tension between history/tradition and present. It highlights the psychological and emotional impact of experiencing trauma. In addition, this monologue explains that Levee’s dangerous temper and abrasive nature is the result of his tragic past, having witnessed the sexual assault of his mother by multiple white men. 
  • Important Note: In this scene, Levee recounts his experience watching his mother get sexually assaulted and him fighting back and getting injured and uses racial slurs. This may be triggering for students, and as a result, we suggest framing the sensitive nature of the content for students as well as some basic norms for talking about race, physical abuse, or sexual violence. Nevertheless, we believe that this scene is an important one because Wilson uses this monologue containing violence as an element that further develops Levee’s complex characterization and relationship with other characters.
