A Note for Teachers

  • In this lesson, students study key moments in the final scene to consider what Wilson is ultimately saying about life, our world, and human beings. Students should tie the final scene to thematic ideas and Essential Questions they explored throughout the unit. For example, what is Wilson saying about madness, nonconformity, and the price of pursuing overwhelming desire?
  • Students also spend a significant amount of time in this lesson, watching the film adaptation of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. You may decide to split the film analysis over two lessons, to separate the close reading lesson from the film analysis lesson, or to have students complete the film analysis for homework.
