How does the symbol of the Phoenix connect to the events at the end of the novel and develop Bradbury's ideas about censorship and knowledge? Provide specific evidence from the text to support your ideas and carefully explain your thinking.

Criteria for Success

  • Identifies that the Phoenix symbolizes resilience, hope, and rebirth.
  • Identifies connections between the symbol and the events at the end of the novel:
    • The city has burnt to the ground, destroying the oppressive government.
    • In its place, a new city can be built.
    • Montag and the book people are preserving books and knowledge, providing hope that they can rebuild a city that values literature and critical thinking.
  • Connects the events to Bradbury's theme of the importance of resisting censorship in order to preserve knowledge.
