1. Explain Matthew Arnold’s use of figurative language to convey the world with and without faith. Use evidence to support your answer.

2. Draw a connection between the worlds described by the speaker in the poem and the world in which Montag lives. Use evidence from both texts to support your answer.

  • What is the poet saying in the opening two verses?
  • The phrase “bright girdle furled” implies what?
  • The diction in verses 6–7 suggests what?
  • Describe the shift in tone in the second stanza.
