Target Task

Writing Prompt

1. Evaluate Montag as an anti-hero based on his actions on pp. 115–119. Support your answer with evidence.

2. How do his actions compare to what John Proctor would have done? Explain using specific examples.

Key Questions

  • What does the diction in the paragraph about Montag’s face suggest?
  • What has Mildred done? Why do you think she did this?
  • How does Beatty describe fire on p. 109?
  • What are Beatty’s intentions?
  • How does Montag feel as he burns his own house? Why?
  • How does the diction on p. 111 create mood?
  • What does Montag decide to do on p. 113?
  • And what does he do on p. 114?
  • How is Montag numb both literally and figuratively on p. 114? Continue to track this motif of numbness.
  • Examine the structure of pp. 115–118. Explain why Bradbury has written it this way.
  • What do you think of Montag’s solution to this problem? Is he heroic? Is he antiheroic?
  • What does the Seashell reveal about Montag’s current status?

Notes

  • Note: There is an allusion to Daedalus and Icarus here.
  • While not related to the target task, it is also important to note Montag’s numb leg. Half of his body is numb and half alive. He has to drag the dead/numb leg, similar to how he has to drag along his past sins.
  • Montag is an anti-hero here because he is doing what he is doing for himself, not for the greater good, like Proctor. This lesson may take two days.
  • Assign pp. 119–123 for Homework.
