Key Questions

  • On p. 39, is Montag talking or thinking?
  • What do you notice about the structure?
  • How does the structure of the dialogue on p. 40 differ from the structure of the thoughts? Why?

  • Explain what Mildred’s response reveals.
  • Examine the structure on p. 41. What is Montag doing?
  • Why does Montag begin to cry on p. 41?
  • Explain what Bradbury means when he uses the word “wall” on p. 41. Is he being literal, figurative, or both? Use at least two specific examples to back up your claim.
  • Who is speaking in the dialogue on p. 42 at the top?
  • What does the diction in the paragraph beginning with “a great” on p. 42 suggest?
  • What do you notice about the structure of the dialogue of the people on the television on p. 45?

Notes

  • Throughout this scene, Montag’s thoughts are long and rambling (think back to Holden) yet the speech is short and clipped. This illustrates the lack of communication in the society.
  • Montag is actually sad at the idea of not caring about his wife. He realizes how numb they have become.
  • You may wish to assign pp. 45–50 for homework.
