Writing Prompt

Evaluate Beatty’s main argument about society, communication, and censorship in his speech. Explain and critique his argument using evidence from the text.

Key Questions

  • According to Beatty, what is happening to the minority population?
  • So, in order to not step on toes, what was done?
  • On p. 55, Beatty explains that this is not the government’s fault. Whose fault is it according to Beatty?
  • What happened to “intellectuals?
  • Identify the metaphor used at the top of p. 56. What is Beatty communicating with this metaphor?
  • Why were houses fireproofed all over the world?
  • What has Beatty admitted about the past that he had previously denied?
  • What is the irony of Beatty’s words on p. 56?
  • Why was Clarisse a “time bomb” according to Beatty on p. 57? How does this statement reflect his views on society?
  • According to Beatty, what kinds of things should we fill people’s minds with and why?

Notes

  • Three reasons from the two-day analysis:
    • Censorship came about because:
      • Technology contributed to mass amounts of people having access to knowledge.
      • People wanted information faster, thus it was paired down.
      • People were offended by things; censorship makes it so no one will be offended.
  • Assign pp. 60–65 for homework.
