Do you agree or disagree with Eva that Nel and Sula are just alike? Why?

Key Questions

  • What does the diction used to describe the rooms in the nursing home imply?
  • How has Eva changed? Circle specific diction and write a margin note.
  • Based on Eva’s physical description, what assumptions can the reader make about her life since the home?
  • What do Eva’s first words to Nel suggest about her mental state? How does it make Nel feel?
  • Underline the parts of Eva’s words that are true or factual events.
  • What does Eva allude to at the bottom of p. 168?
  • Do you think Nel is acting nobly here? How is she responding? How should she respond?
  • What do you think of Eva’s words? “Just alike. Both of you. Never was no difference between you.” Is this true or false?
  • Is Eva talking sense or just old and hallucinating? Why is Nel so rattled?
  • What does Nel realize at the end?

Notes

  • Nel is bothered because Eva might be right that she was the bad one and she knows that may be true.
  • She finally realizes that she has missed Sula all this time, not Jude.
