Criteria for Success


  1. Understand that two-digit numbers are composed of tens and ones.
  2. Compose a given two-digit number using appropriate representations of drawn tens and ones. 
  3. Combine two sets of built two-digit numbers to find the total. 
  4. Understand that 10 ones equals a new ten in situations where there are more than 9 ones. 

Tips for Teachers


Lesson Materials

  • Base ten blocks (7 ten rods and 9 ones cubes for teacher)
  • Tens place value chart (1 per student) — These should be laminated or in page protectors to reuse
  • Sheet protectors (1 per student)
  • Dry erase marker (1 per student)
