Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 2.OA.A.1 — Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Foundational Standards

  • 1.OA.A.1

Criteria for Success

  1. Solve one-step word problems involving addition & subtraction.
  2. Represent problem visually, using pictures, drawings, words and numbers.
  3. Represent problem with a related equation.
  4. Solve equation using addition & subtraction strategies.

Tips for Teachers

  • Students have seen these word problem subtypes in previous grades. This first word problem centered lesson is focused on attending to students ability to represent problems with a visual and related equation.
  • Visual representations can support students as they make sense of different problem types. This is a math skill that will continue to support them throughout their math careers.
  •  This lesson can be used as an opportunity to preview tape diagrams. In Lesson 13 students will focus more on their precision with drawing tape diagrams that represent word problems.
  • To help students understand word problems, using the 3 reads routine and acting out or modeling the problems could be used as an access point. Read more about word problems here.

Lesson Materials

  • Optional: White board (1 per student)
