Target Task

Writing Prompt

1. Read the line below and use it to answer the question that follows.

“I’m the Queen Bee, safe in the hive. You will be the drone, the traveling ear.”

What does the above metaphor reveal about each man’s role in the plan they have hatched?

2. What is Montag and Faber’s plan? Explain the plan and evaluate the risks and potential for success.

Key Questions

  • What is Montag’s original plan and what does Faber think of it?
  • Track the reasons we need books according to Faber on p. 82.
  • What does Faber mean by “Do your own bit of saving, and if you drown, at least die knowing you were headed for shore.”?
  • Who does Montag believe they can call on for help?
  • Summarize Faber’s argument in the paragraph on p. 83.
  • What will eventually end their civilization according to Faber on p. 84?
  • How does Montag convince Faber to help him?
  • On p. 86, Faber shows Montag something he’s designed. What is it? How did he create it? How is it different from Mildred’s seashell radio?

Notes

  • Students may/should begin to grow skeptical of Faber here. The plan to spy on Beatty through the ear chip puts Montag completely in danger and keeps Faber completely safe. It simply allows Faber to feel energized while Montag puts himself at risk.
  • Assign pp. 88–89 for homework if there is not time to read them in class.

Next

Explain what is revealed about society through the words of the women at Mildred’s party and describe their reaction to Montag’s poem.
