Key Questions

Questions pp. 88–89:

  • What type of figurative language is used in the first paragraph of p. 88?
  • Explain what is literally going on in the first paragraph on p. 88?
  • What is the mood of the first paragraph on p. 88? Explain.
  • How is what Montag is doing with Faber actually very similar to Montag’s old job as a fireman? Use direct quotations from Montag to support your answer.
  • Explain Montag’s current inner conflict using evidence from pp. 88–89.

Questions pp. 90–96

  • What does the figurative language in the opening sentence reveal about Mildred?
  • What does the diction on p. 89 reveal about Montag’s views of Mildred and her friends’ party?
  • At the bottom of p. 89, what does the structure of the women’s dialogue reveal about their conversation?
  • Describe the nature of the shows the women watch on p. 90.
  • How do the women react to Montag’s entrance?
  • What does the conversation on pp. 90–91 between Montag and Mrs. Phelps reveal about society?
  • Track Bradbury’s diction used to characterize the women throughout pp. 91 and 92.
  • How do the people of this society view wars?
  • How do they feel about marriage?
  • Explain how Montag is making the women feel on pp. 92–93 and why.
  • Track the women’s reaction to Montag’s action on pp. 94–95.

Notes

  • Begin class with a review of pp. 88–89 if it was read for homework.
  • Students should gather that marriage is quick and meaningless in this society and that women have shallow, surface-level conversations.
  • The poem evokes emotions in them that have been suppressed for so long they do not know how to react. If students do not bring it up, the teacher can help them recall the fear vs. anxiety article from The Catcher in the Rye unit.
  • Assign initial analysis of Montag’s poem for homework.

Next

Analyze the excerpt from the poem "Dover Beach" that is included on p. 96 and explain how it connects to events in Farenheit 451.
