Writing Prompt

Describe Bradbury’s use of structure to create suspense in this scene.

Key Questions

Homework Review pp. 119–123:

  • What is announced on p. 119?
  • Why does the author say, “Montag stood trying to make himself feel the shock…”?
  • What does Bradbury compare the city to on p. 119? Why is this?
  • Describe Montag’s movements on p. 120.
  • What literary device does Bradbury use in the paragraph beginning with “The beetle…” on p. 121?
  • What is Bradbury’s likely purpose in using the above? What is he trying to show?
  • What happens to Montag at the bottom of p. 121 and how does it actually help him?
  • What misconception does Montag realize on the first half of p. 122? What does this reinforce about Montag?
  • Where does Montag end up on p. 123?
  • Describe the simile at the end of this reading on p. 123.

Questions pp. 123–133:

  • How does Bradbury personify Mr. and Mrs. Black’s house?
  • How does Montag justify what he does to Mrs. Black and her house on pp. 123–124?
  • How does the above enforce the idea of Montag as an anti-hero?
  • How are Faber’s words on p. 125 ironic?
  • Where does Faber tell Montag to go and why?
  • What does Montag discover on the bottom of p. 126?
  • How does Bradbury use juxtaposition again to describe the new Hound?
  • Examine the structure on pages 130–131. Why does Bradbury mix long and short sentences?
  • What literary device is used in the paragraph on p. 131 beginning with “He shouted…”?
  • Why does Bradbury do this?
  • Examine the entire structure of p. 132. How does it help to build suspense?

Notes

  • Begin with a quiz or review of pp. 119–123 if it was assigned for homework.
  • Throughout this scene, Bradbury uses a mixture of long and short sentences and repetition. This is supposed to mirror the frantic, frenzied nature of Montag’s flight. We have passed the book’s climax and are now in the falling action.
  • Assign pp. 133–138 for homework.

Next
