Writing Prompt

Based on what you have read in these pages, what does Montag’s society value and not value? Explain using specific examples from the pages read today.

Key Questions

  • What is Montag’s conflict on p. 8?
  • What does Montag compare Clarisse’s face to and why?
  • Why is Montag thinking of Clarisse on p. 9? What does this reveal about society?
  • What does the following line indicate? “The room was not empty.”
  • How is Montag feeling at the bottom of p. 9?
  • Track how Bradbury describes Montag’s wife on p. 10. What is wrong here?
  • What is “the object” on pp. 10–11?
  • What does the figurative language on p. 11 suggest about Millie?
  • What is happening in the paragraph beginning with “as he stood” on p. 11?
  • Why does Bradbury say, “He felt his hand plunge toward the telephone”?
  • Explain the “machine.” What does it show about society? What does Bradbury’s figurative language about the machine show?
  • What do the words of the “doctors” suggest about the society Montag lives in?
  • What does Montag notice about Clarisse’s family on his way home? How does it make him feel?
  • What do pp. 16–17 suggest about Mildred?
  • Why does Bradbury most likely include the scene between Montag and Millie on pp. 17–18?
  • Describe how the “parlor walls” operate.

Notes

  • It will take students a bit to realize Mildred has overdosed. Bradbury does this on purpose to mirror Montag’s state of confusion as well. Through this chapter, students should gather that there is not much value placed on life or conversation, as overdosing is a common thing whereas Clarisse’s family talking is very odd.
  • Assign pp. 19–21 as homework.

Next

Explain what the Hound represents.

Infer the values of this society based on Clarisse’s description of her school day.
