Target Task

Writing Prompt

What does Morrison’s use of the words “restlessness” and “agitation” suggest about the mood of the girls at the start of this reading?

Who is at fault for what happens, Sula or Nel? Or perhaps both? Explain.

Will this event strengthen or hurt their friendship? Explain your reasoning.

Key Questions

  • What are the girls doing on p. 58? Why does Morrison spend so much time here? How are they feeling?
  • How does Nel treat Chicken? Sula? Is there a difference?
  • What happens to Chicken? Who knows?
  • Why is Sula so surprised by Shadrack’s house?
  • How does Shadrack treat Sula? What does she lose along the way?
  • What do you think “Always. Always.” means?

Notes

  • This chapter is the start of the separation of the girls. When Chicken Little dies, it is important to have students examine whose fault it is. Nel was teasing Chicken, which is why Sula played with him in the first place and accidentally caused the death.
  • Student opinions will differ on whether this will bring the girls together or separate them, and it can generate some good debate. Students should use evidence to support their ideas.
