Target Task

Writing Prompt

What are the adults mourning in addition to Chicken Little? Explain.

Read the last line of the chapter and think back to Holden and the ducks in The Catcher in the Rye. What is coming to an end for Nel and Sula?

Key Questions

  • What does the recovery of Chicken Little’s body reveal about race?
  • Why does Chicken have to have a closed-coffin funeral?
  • What do Nel and Sula’s different emotions at the funeral reveal about them?
  • What are the adults remembering on p. 65? (Hint: the answer is not Chicken Little.)

Notes

  • Chicken’s funeral is also a mourning of the loss of childhood as a whole. The people of the Bottom flash back to their own ruined childhoods.
  • The last line refers to where “butterflies go in the winter,” which harkens back to Holden and the ducks in the winter. This signifies the loss of innocence for Sula and Nel.
