Target Task

Writing Prompt

How does Morrison create mood surrounding Sula’s return to the Bottom? Compare the techniques she uses to those used by Du Maurier in “The Birds.” Use evidence to support your answer.

Key Questions

  • In "The Birds", what does Du Maurier’s use of diction imply about the birds?

  • In "The Birds", how does this create mood?

  • On pp. 89–91 of Sula, how does Morrison employ a similar technique to achieve the same effect?

Notes

  • Students should read at least the first page of "The Birds" to identify the mood, but could read the entire story if time allows.
  • Both describe birds as being restless and agitated. In both texts, the birds are an omen of bad times to come.
  • Assign pp. 91–94 for homework.
