Target Task

Writing Prompt

How do the people of Medallion view Sula’s “evil”? Explain.

Explain how Sula has impacted the town. Use evidence to support your answer.

Key Questions

  • What tone is established by Morrison’s use of the word “conviction” to describe how the people feel about Sula’s “evil”?
  • According to the bottom of p. 117, what is the cause of all of the strife in Medallion? How does this then impact the people?
  • How does this connect to The Crucible?
  • Why do they accept Sula’s evil? Consider the diction and explanation Morrison gives on p. 118?
  • How is Sula different from other people in the town? What events in her life have shaped her?
  • How does the affair impact Nel? How does Sula feel about this?
  • Read the following quote from p. 121: “And like any artist with no art form, she became dangerous.” What does this quotation reveal about Sula?
  • What does the diction used to describe the women in the town reveal about Sula’s thoughts? 121–122
  • Explain Ajax’s impact on Sula using details from pp. 124–125.

Notes

  • The people of Medallion view evil as a necessary part of life. They believe God has sent them Sula to prove that they are faithful.
  • She actually brings the town closer together because they blame her for all that goes wrong. This is good and bad in that they have a common enemy, yet they are not introspective with their faults.
