Writing Prompt

What is the significance of the green ribbon?

What is the significance of the license?

Key Questions

  • Explain the significance of the green ribbon using specific details from p. 131.
  • On p. 132, what does it mean when it says Ajax smiled at her “delicious indifference?” What trait of hers does he admire?
  • How is the above indifference contradicted by Sula’s later actions?
  • How does Ajax react to the changes in Sula?
  • Why does Sula search for Ajax’s license?
  • What does she realize about their relationship at the end of the chapter?

Notes

  • The green ribbon represents the domestication of Sula and her desire to look a certain way to please Ajax. He actually dislikes the ribbon because it means Sula is becoming like other women and losing the qualities he likes about her.
  • The license indicates that Sula never really knew Ajax if she never really knew his full name.
