  • What does Holden ask Horwitz about?
  • Why do you think Holden cares SO MUCH for the ducks? What character trait of his does this emphasize?
  • How does the author’s use of juxtaposition in the scene at Ernie’s reveal theme?
  • The final paragraph on p. 83 is an example of what literary technique?
  • What is somewhat surprising to Holden at the bottom of p. 83?
  • Why does Holden go to Ernie’s?

Notes

  • There are two big pieces to today: the symbolism of the ducks and the juxtaposition that reveals corruption in Ernie’s bar.
  • The ducks are a new idea, so this should be done in class. Ernie’s is very similar to the hotel scene, so this is a good opportunity to see if students can master this concept on their own. Begin it in class, and have students finish the scene for homework.
