Writing Prompt

Why does Holden wear the red hat? Explain using evidence.

Key Questions

  • What does Holden reveal about himself on p. 19 (track all titles Holden gives himself throughout book).
  • What evidence does Salinger provide that proves Holden is an outcast?
  • What do the details in this chapter mainly emphasize about Ackley?

Notes

This lesson provides an opportunity for a discussion about how we perceive ourselves versus how the outside world perceives us. It is important to keep in mind that students are closer in age to Holden than the teacher and it may, therefore, be hard for them to initially read between the lines regarding the difference in perspective. Assign chapter 4 for homework.

Next

Analyze Holden’s true character based on his relationship with Jane, his treatment of Ackley, and his revelation of Allie’s death.

Infer the effect Allie’s death has had on Holden.
