Target Task

Writing Prompt

Explain Mary Warren’s changing emotions in the court scene. At this point you do not need to produce a written response, just a list of relevant evidence. Be sure your evidence addresses both how and why Warren’s emotions change.

Key Questions

  • Track Mary Warren’s changing emotions.
  • What is the cause of each of these changes?
  • How does Miller convey these changes?

Notes

  • Begin class with a quick review/quiz of the homework reading.
  • Students should then independently continue to read and track Mary’s emotions. They will do so for much of Act 3 until they have gathered enough evidence to write an essay.
  • For homework, assign p. 102. Have students break down Proctor’s confession line by line.

Next

Examine Miller’s use of suspense.

Continue to track Mary Warren’s emotions for open response.
