Target Task

On p. 206 we learn a lot about Celia and Lourdes’s mother-daughter relationship. How is this similar to the relationship of Lourdes and Pilar? Use evidence from Celia’s letters and Jorge’s words in the previous chapter.

Knowing what we do now, from Jorge’s visits, why did Jorge react as he did to Rufino? Explain.

Key Questions

  • Why did Celia like Rufino?
  • How did Jorge react to Rufino on p. 205? Why?
  • What does Celia reveal about Lourdes?
  • Why did Celia love Gustavo so much?
  • What does Celia think of Rufino’s parents?
  • What caused the tension between Celia and Zaida on p. 208?
  • What is happening in Cuba on pp. 208–209?
  • Why does Celia have reason to celebrate on p. 209?

Notes

  • This chapter can be done at home.
  • It heavily refers to the ousting of Batista and eventually the Americans at the hands of Castro’s rebels.
