Key Questions

  • Where does the “battle” stand at the beginning of Part 3? Use evidence from the reading you did for homework to support your answer.
  • What is the cause of Bromden’s deafness?  (210) (Make a connection to Invisible Man here for students who have read it.)
  • What stereotypes are revealed in Bromden’s flashback on p. 210?
  • How do the white men in the flashback speak about Bromden’s people/house? What does this reveal?
  • How do the three people react to Bromden? How does he react to them?
  • On p. 214 the motivation for the 3 white people is revealed. Why are they there?

Notes

  • Students should read Jackson’s speech as an extended Do Now or introduction to today’s reading in the novel.
  • Students should also answer the first key question (about the homework reading) prior to reading the novel today.
  • For homework, or to start class the following day, consider also having students read Red Cloud's Speech After Wounded Knee by Chief Red Cloud. It gives the Native American Perspective on “Indian Removal”.
