  • Students should read Jackson’s speech as an extended Do Now or introduction to today’s reading in the novel. 
  • Students should also answer the first key question (about the homework reading) prior to reading the novel today.
  • For homework, or to start class the following day, consider also having students read the following as well as it gives the Native American Perspective on “Indian Removal”

  • If students do not complete the reading in class, assign the end of the chapter for homework, having students annotate for a discussion about “big” and “small” and what is meant by it. 
  • The audiobook reading of the singing of the song is helpful for establishing tone. If you have access to the audiobook, you may wish to play this clip.
