Writing Prompt

What mood does the author use the images and events of pp. 356-364 to help create? Explain using multiple examples from this excerpt of the chapter.

Key Questions

  • How did the narrator feel about the speech he made in Chapter 15? How did the audience react? How did the Brotherhood react? Compare the reactions and examine the significance.
  • As we read Chapter 17, trace the events and images that seem out of place or unexpected to either the reader or the narrator. (It is recommended that students attempt to identify these on their own and share their findings with each other. Examples they should identify: Brother Jack picks him up at midnight [after four months, this is unusual], he does not bring him to Chthonian but to a place in Harlem called El Toro [the bull], there is a picture of a matador and bull where the mirror should be, another matador image shows the matador being gored, being put in charge of the Harlem office, Brother Jack [a white man] telling him how to organize African Americans in Harlem, Brother Tarp being old but vigorous, Brother Clifton being late and injured.)
  • What is the significance of the repetition of the terms "scientific" and "ideology" in reference to the Brotherhood? What does it reveal about their beliefs about themselves? About their approach to change?
  • What mood does the author use these images and events to help create? Explain using evidence from the text. (It is a mood of foreboding, or of things being contrary to what one would expect - creating an uneasy mood.)

Next
