Key Questions

  • What is one reason people love to listen to stories?

  • Describe the setting. What is happening? Would you want to be a part of this? Why or why not?

  • Describe Spider. Why did people tell stories about Spider in West Africa?

  • Model fluent reading: “As we read these stories, we are the storytellers. It is important we do our best to sound like storytellers as we read. I want you to notice how I read with expression in this part of the text. How do I use my voice to help you understand that I am a storyteller?”

Vocabulary

clever

adj.

smart in a tricky way

mischievous

adj.

likes to cause trouble (in a playful way)

Notes

  • While it is important for students to understand the background behind this collection of stories, it is incredibly important that students do not OVERgeneralize what they learn to the entire continent of Africa. Africa is more than villages where people sit around and tell stories. Stories are an important part of the culture, but they are not the entire culture.
  • Today’s text should be read aloud. To build engagement/excitement, have students sit in a circle like described in the text, if possible. Teachers can decide the reading structure they would like to use for this unit. For more guidance, read the Text Selection Rationale.
