Key Questions

  • How did the stepmother treat Cinderella? Why did she treat her this way?

  • Why does "the poor girl put up with everything"? What does this show us about Cinderella?

  • Fluency: When I read aloud, I read fluently. I am going to read pages 6–7 and I want you to notice the way I read. How does it help you better understand the story?

  • How does Cinderella help her stepsisters get ready for the ball? How do they treat her in return? Why?

  • How did Cinderella feel after her stepsisters left? How do you know?

  • How does the fairy godmother help Cinderella?

  • What advice does the fairy godmother give Cinderella? Why?

Notes

  • This is the first interaction with Cinderella. The focus of this day is making sure that students know and can retell the classic version of the story. It is also important that students start to develop a deep understanding of the characters and their traits so they can compare and contrast in later lessons. We recommend using several anchor charts throughout the unit to capture students' emerging content knowledge:
    • Fairy tale characteristics anchor chart that lists the traits of a fairy tale.
    • Fairy tale lessons anchor chart where you capture the lessons learned at the end of each Cinderella story.
    • Character traits anchor chart to build as students use and learn more adjectives to describe characters.
