Target Task

Discussion & Writing Prompt

Describe the setting of Cinderella: An Islamic Tale. Why is the setting important to the plot?

Key Questions

  • What details do you notice about the setting so far? Use the words or pictures to give evidence.

  • Why did the stepmother treat Zahra terribly? How did Zahra respond?

  • How do the illustrations on pages 10–11 help to describe the characters and setting?

  • Fluency: When I read aloud, I read fluently. I am going to read page 14 and I want you to notice the way I read. How does it help you better understand the story?

  • Why do you think the author includes so many Arabic phrases?

  • How do things change for Cinderella? Why?

Vocabulary

humble

adj.

modest, not full of yourself

proud

adj.

full of yourself; arrogant

arrogant

adj.

thinks they are better than others

Notes

  • The key for this Target Task is the understanding that at the beginning of stories, authors often describe the setting. They give clues about the setting in the pictures and words. Students should understand that the setting of a story (when and where the story takes place) has a large influence on what characters do and on the differences between the versions of Cinderella.
  • This text contains many phrases in Arabic. If you are a non-Arabic speaker, do not skip these phrases. You can prepare for the lesson by looking up pronunciation guides. Before teaching, let students know that you are going to do your best to say the phrase and respect the language that you are not fluent in. This is also a great chance to ask for help from any Arabic-speaking students in your class.
