Target Task

Design and build a roller-coaster track to get a marble from one desk to another. Explain why the roller-coaster track did or did not work as designed using vocabulary from the unit.

Notes

  • This lab day should be done in teams.
  • Activity should be modified from https://www.teachengineering.org/activities/view/dukrollercoastermusic_act.
  • Give students pipe insulators and marbles as tools for building a roller coaster. Then have students draw and design their roller coaster BEFORE they build.
  • Questions to consider:
    • How high does the first hill need to be?
    • Where will the car accelerate? Decelerate?
    • Where will the car have the most potential energy? Kinetic energy?
    • How will the car stop at the end of the ride?
  • After teams have created different designs and explained why they think their designs will work using vocabulary from the unit, give them time to build the roller coaster.
  • Have them refine their design based on what worked and what didn't work. Have teams explain what they needed to change and why.
  • Time how long it takes for the marbles to get through the roller coaster.
  • Lead students in a whole-class discussion of why some roller coasters worked better than others.

Common Core Standards

  • 3-5-ETS1-1 — Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
