Explain the purpose and impact of Camp Aranu’tiq by reading Being Jazz and watching a video, and describe the differences between those two sources.

Writing Prompt

What impact does attending Camp Aranu’tiq have on the campers? Why does it have this impact? Provide evidence from both the film and Being Jazz to support your answer.

  • What is Camp Aranu’tiq? Provide at least two pieces of evidence from Being Jazz and the Camp Aranu’tiq video.
  • What challenges do trans kids face outside of camp based on today’s chapter in Being Jazz and the video? Provide specific evidence from both texts.
  • How is Jazz’s depiction of Camp Aranu’tiq different from the video? Consider: Who is featured? Who speaks? What is shown/described?
  • Discussion: On page 119, Jazz remembers something that a reporter said to her: “You’re transgender? I never would have been able to tell!” (119). Why do you think this was upsetting to her? Do you think that a transgender person has to “pass” in order to be fully accepted and respected?

Standard and Literary Concepts

  • When thinking about standard RI.6.9—comparing the way information is presented about the same topic by two different authors—it can be helpful to think about each author’s purpose and point of view, as this impacts the format and type of information included. For example, in today’s class, students will discuss Jazz’s description of her experiences at Camp Aranu’tiq, and they will also watch a promotional video about the camp.
  • Jazz’s purpose is to provide readers with a description of her personal experiences at camp, while the video’s purpose is to provide more general information about what camp is and provide interviews with a number of different campers about their experience. Because the video and the memoir have two different purposes and two different perspectives, the information they present will likely be different.

  • You will likely need to show students the film clip several times as they answer their Key Questions.
