Writing Prompt

What is Jazz’s point of view on her gender identity? Has it changed over the course of her life? How does she convey her point of view in this chapter? Provide at least three examples from the text to support your answer.

  • From whose point of view is this book written? How do you know? Support your answer with specific evidence from the text.
  • Why does the author include the description of her dream about the Good Fairy? What does it reveal about her perspective? (p. 7)

  • What is Jazz’s perspective on the idea of “gender identity disorder”? How and why does her perspective differ from that of the authors of the DSM? (p. 9)

  • What was Grandma Jacky’s perspective on Jazz’s preference for “girl” toys and clothing? How does Jazz demonstrate her perspective? (p. 8)

  • Discussion: How would this book be different if it were told from Jazz’s mother’s perspective? From her grandmother’s perspective?
  • Discussion: Consider the video you watched yesterday of Barbara Walters’ interview with Jazz on 20/20. How does the perspective of this memoir differ from the perspective of the video? What are the benefits of reading a memoir versus watching a news story about that person?

  • Discussion: How does Jazz’s gender differ from her sex?

Standard and Literary Concepts

  • Students may need a refresher on the differences between biography, autobiography, and memoir.
    • Biography: An account of a person’s life (usually covering his/her/their entire life) written by someone other than the subject of the book.
    • Autobiography: An account of a person’s life (covering his/her/their entire life) written by the subject of the book.
    • Memoir: A collection of memories with a narrowed focus about the author’s life; may be a short-time span or memories around a specific subject that spans a longer period of time.
  • Ask students to infer what this book is based on from the description and the first several pages.

Notes

  • Today’s reading includes a number of references to genitalia. Continue to reinforce the ground rules you established yesterday around respectful, open conversation. Students may feel uncomfortable discussing these issues.
  • Teachers may wish to encourage students to start a character list.
