What inferences can we make about Percy’s character based on his response to challenges? Make sure to use details from chapter 4 to support your answer.

  • As you read, describe Percy’s challenges in this chapter. List at least two. How does he respond to each one?
  • What happens in this chapter? Explain the gist in two or three sentences. 
  • List two challenges Percy faced in this chapter. Explain how he responded to each in one or two sentences.
  • How do the events of this scene show how Percy has changed from the beginning of the novel up to this point? Cite evidence from the text.

Questions for Myth: “Theseus and the Minotaur”:

  • Would Theseus have been able to complete the quest without Ariadne? Did he have the skills necessary? Why or why not?
  • The ancient Greeks defined heroism by slaying a monster. Do you think Theseus was a hero? How is his experience similar to and different from Percy’s killing of the Minotaur?
