Writing Prompt

In one paragraph, explain how Willy copes with his personal failures. Make sure to use details from the text to support your answer.

What to look for in student response:

Willy has convinced himself that he is successful, he is well-liked, and that his sons are destined for greatness. Whenever he realizes that he hasn’t in fact accomplished any of these things, he lives inside his mind in flashbacks of the past when there was hope. His ability to space out into a dream-like state is his coping mechanism for dealing with reality.

Key Questions

  • pp. 106-108 - What compels Willy to deceive himself and his sons? How is Biff trying to stop the self-deception? Which words on p. 106 make you think that?
  • p. 109 - How does Arthur Miller convey that there is a flashback? (Leaves!) Why does Arthur Miller include a flashback here?
  • pp. 109–110 - What do the flashbacks reveal about Willy’s tendencies when he gets stressed?

Notes

  • Make sure students are noting when it is a flashback (inside Willy’s head) with “FB” and what is present time with “P.” This section can get confusing otherwise.
