Notes

  • As always, be mindful of the fact that immigration is a sensitive topic and may have strong personal resonance for your students. If questions and comments come up, pause to have a conversation.
  • Be sure that you have students carefully read the first footnote in this article! It is important that students understand that while immigration is a hugely significant part of American history, we are not exclusively “a nation of immigrants.” This article states that foreigners were invited to “settle” this country; we know that the country was already inhabited by millions of people.
  • It is also important to be aware of the fact that this article was written in 2014. There have been significant changes in immigration policy since then.
