A Note for Teachers

  • Esperanza is sexually harassed on page 55 in today's reading. A man asks Esperanza to give him a kiss for her birthday and he "grabs [her] face with both hands and kisses [her] hard on the mouth and doesn't let go" (p. 55). Name for students that this is sexual harassment. Reference the informational article, “Gender Norms and Stereotypes” by Fishtank Staff, from Lesson 9 to support students in discussion.
  • Today, many people consider "oriental" an outdated and offensive term for referring to people of East Asian descent. At the time this book was published, it was not generally considered offensive. Make sure that students do not assume that the man's race is somehow related to his behavior.
