A Note for Teachers


  • Today's lesson contains profanity. Emphasize respectful communication, critical thinking, and an understanding of context for this language prior to engaging in today's reading. Name for students whether they should read the word aloud if reading the text for the whole group.

  • How and why does Rashad's perspective of the protest change? What specific evidence from the text develops the idea that his perspective has changed?

  • Compare the description of Rashad's nightmare on page 229 with the description of his artwork on page 246. What is the connection between these images, and why are they significant? Cite specific evidence from the text to support your answer.
