Target Task

Final Discussion Questions:

  • Explain the ending of this play. Why does Wilson choose to end the play this way? What does he want us to walk away thinking about?
  • Who, if anyone, is the hero in this play and why?
  • If August Wilson was asked, "What are your views on family in general?" what would his response be and how do you know?
  • Collectively, what did Cory and Lyons learn from their father, Troy? Explain both the good and the bad.
  • Which character changed the most throughout the play and why/how?
  • What does it mean to be a man to August Wilson? How do you know? Evaluate Troy Maxson's manhood according to August Wilson. Was he a true man?
  • In what ways did society put limits on (or fences around) the characters' abilities to be men or to exercise themselves as individuals?

Notes

Students will prepare for discussion by recording their answers in written notes and then participate in a discussion of the prompts. See "Rigorous Discussion Notes" in the lesson materials.
