Explain to students that The Negro Leagues referenced on page 34 were U.S. professional baseball leagues made up of African-Americans (even baseball was segregated). Blacks were not allowed to play in the major leagues, so they created their own league in the 1880s. Satchel Paige was a pitcher in the Negro Leagues.
