Lesson Guidance

  • All successful writers seek feedback on their writing and incorporate feedback into their work. No matter how many times you go back and reread your own writing, having someone new read your writing will help you see things you might not have noticed.
  • Today students will work with a partner to give and receive feedback. Explain to students that they should ask for feedback on something specific that they are working on so that the feedback they receive feels useful. The reader can also provide feedback on one additional aspect of the essay.
  • If using a rubric, students should select two strands on which they want to receive feedback.
  • Give students the opportunity to read one another’s writing and take turns giving and receiving feedback.
  • Students should incorporate at least one piece of feedback into their essays.
  • Students should complete the final draft of their essays in preparation to present their work.

Common Core Standards

  • W.8.1 — Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
  • W.8.2 — Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content
  • W.8.3 — Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
  • W.8.5 — With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on how well purpose and audience have been addressed.
