Writing Prompt

We learned early on in the novel that the purple hibiscus is a symbol of freedom (see p. 16). Explain why the author would choose to have this symbol appear in this particular chapter. Use evidence from the text to support your answer.

Notes


  • Students should continue to gather evidence about the ways in which the two households are different, paying particular attention to each household’s relationship with their Christian faith and the effects that government corruption has on their lives. The teacher should also make sure students notice the reference to the purple hibiscus on p.128.
  • For homework students should read pages 133-139.
