Lesson 16

Math

Unit 2

2nd Grade

Lesson 16 of 21

Objective

Represent and solve compare story problems within 100 (Day 2).

Student-Facing

I can represent and solve compare story problems.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 2.NBT.B.5 — Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
  • 2.OA.A.1 — Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Foundational Standards

  • 1.NBT.C.4
  • 1.NBT.C.5
  • 1.NBT.C.6
  • 1.OA.A.1
  • 1.OA.D.8

Criteria for Success

  1. Solve one-step word problems involving addition & subtraction within 100.
  2. Represent problems with a tape diagram and an equation with a symbol for the unknown.
  3. Solve using a flexible strategy.

Tips for Teachers

  • Students will continue to work with more difficult subtypes of compare problems in this day's lesson. In student drawings and equations be sure that the symbol students are using is the same.
  • In the Anchor Tasks, you will note that we use a question mark to represent the unknown in both tape diagrams and in the equation. This is a universal symbol that can help students in early grades make sense of what they know and what they are trying to find.
