  1. Recognize and use patterns of ten.
  2. When adding, notice patterns that make a ten.
  3. Decompose an addend for the ten and the rest. 
  4. Add remaining addend to the ten that was made to solve.

Tips for Teachers


In first grade, students have had exposure to equations written in different orientations. This lesson is continuing on with this skill.

  • Optional: Two-sided counters (30 per student pair)
  • Optional: Linking cubes (2 different color towers of 10)
