Adding and Subtracting Within 20

Lesson 7

Math

Unit 1

2nd Grade

Lesson 7 of 15

Objective

Relate subtraction to addition to solve within 20.

Student-Facing

I can solve subtraction equations by relating to addition.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 2.OA.B.2 — Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. See standard 1.OA.6 for a list of mental strategies.

Foundational Standards

  • 1.OA.C.6

Criteria for Success

  1. Recognize the relationship between subtraction and addition equations.
  2. Solve subtraction equations using the relationship between addition equations.
  3. See and rewrite subtraction as a missing addend equation.
  4. Use a make ten strategy to solve the equation.

Tips for Teachers

Students use the relation between addition and subtraction to support their work on fluency within 20. Knowing all the sums of two one-digit numbers supports them in this as they use this to make a ten to solve for the missing addend or part. For this lesson students are encouraged to see the connection between addition and subtraction as they convert subtraction equations to unknown addend problems to solve.
