Adding and Subtracting Within 1,000

Lesson 18

Math

Unit 5

2nd Grade

Lesson 18 of 25

Objective

Use place value drawings to subtract within 1,000 with up to two decompositions.

Student-Facing

I can use place value drawings to represent subtraction with up to two decompositions.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 2.NBT.B.7 — Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

Foundational Standards

  • 1.NBT.B.2
  • 2.NBT.A.1
  • 2.NBT.A.2

Criteria for Success

  1. Draw three-digit numbers with base ten block drawings  to represent hundreds, tens, and ones for the minuend in the problem.
  2. If there are not enough tens and ones to subtract, redraw the whole by decomposing a hundred into 10 tens and a ten into 10 ones and remodel the whole number as a sum of hundreds, more than 10 tens, and more than 10 ones to subtract.
  3. Subtract units by place value to find the difference.

Tips for Teachers

When students are solving situations that require two decompositions it is helpful to model for students that they can do all of their regroupings or decompositions before subtracting as is modeled in the guidance in the lesson or students may do it in parts beginning with regrouping so they can subtract in the ones, and then regrouping (if necessary) to subtract in the tens.

Problem 1

Use place value drawings to solve. Show how you redraw the whole to subtract.

Reflect: When do you have to redraw numbers to subtract?

a.   490 - 219 = _____

b.   529 - 219 = _____

c.   312 - 219 = _____

Target Task

5-10 minutes

Use a place value drawing to solve. Record your answers.

a.   364 - 78 = _____

b.   624 - 317 = _____

c.   552 - 265 = _____

How did you rewrite 552 to subtract?
