Lesson 3

Math

Unit 5

2nd Grade

Lesson 3 of 25

Objective

Use the associative property to make a multiple of 100 or multiple of 10 to add.

Student-Facing

I can make 100 or more than one 10 to add.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 2.NBT.B.7 — Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

Foundational Standards

  • 1.NBT.B.2
  • 2.NBT.A.1
  • 2.NBT.A.2

Criteria for Success

  1. Decompose addend to compose a multiple of hundreds or tens with other addends.
  2. Make a multiple 100 or multiple 10 to add using arrow notation, empty number line, or mental math to add by place value.

Tips for Teachers

Students will continue to use number bonds to decompose addends similar to the work students did in Unit 2. They should prioritize making a hundred or multiple of 100 or multiple of 10 to add as they did in the previous lesson.
