Adding and Subtracting Within 1,000

Lesson 9

Math

Unit 5

2nd Grade

Lesson 9 of 25

Objective

Use expanded form to add within 1,000.

Student-Facing

I can use expanded form to add within 1,000.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 2.NBT.B.7 — Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

Foundational Standards

  • 1.NBT.B.2
  • 2.NBT.A.1
  • 2.NBT.A.2

Criteria for Success

  1. Decompose multi-digit numbers into their respective hundreds, tens, and ones in expanded form.
  2. Add like units together to add to find the total of respective hundreds, tens, and ones.
  3. Represent expanded form addition stacked vertically by place value and add vertical like units together.
  4. Combine the overall totals of hundreds, tens, and ones to find the total.

Tips for Teachers

  • Making direct connections to concrete models or place value drawings can support students as they move towards more abstract thinking of adding multi-digit numbers within 1,000.
  • Using expanded form notation for addition can be represented by adding same place value units together or by aligning the addends in expanded form vertically and then adding as you would similarly to the standard algorithm. In this lesson students should be exposed to both.

Problem 1

Jin had the following base ten blocks and wanted to record how she added using numbers. Finish Jin's thinking below.

300 + 200 = 500

40 +       =

      + 1 =

500 +       +       =

Problem 2

Mia solved by thinking of expanded form. Some of her work is shown below.

a.   Complete Mia's thinking.

357 + 190 = ____

$$\begin{array}{crcrcrcc} &300 &+ &50 &+ &7 &&&\\ + \ \ \ &100 &+ &90 &+ &0 &&&\\ \hline &400 &+ &\_\_\_ &+ &\_\_\_ &= &\_\_\_ \end{array}$$

b.   Solve using Mia's thinking:

435 + 273 = _____
