Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 2.NBT.A.2 — Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.

Foundational Standards

  • 1.NBT.A.1

Criteria for Success

  1. Understand that a number line is a tool to represent distance between numbers.
  2. Identify the benchmark and interval numbers on a number line.
  3. Given a particular number, estimate the location of a number on a number line.

Tips for Teachers

  • The work of this and the next few lessons with number lines extends the introduction students had to number lines in Unit 3 when they worked with measurement and number lines within 100. Here students are asked to extend their knowledge to within 1000 similar to the extension of their numbers in grade 2 work.
  • Students may make natural connections to rulers as they use number lines with three-digit numbers.
