Lesson 9

Math

Unit 4

2nd Grade

Lesson 9 of 22

Objective

Use place value understanding to count to 1,000 and reason about three-digit numbers.

Student-Facing

I can count to 1,000.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 2.NBT.A.2 — Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.

Foundational Standards

  • 1.NBT.A.1

Criteria for Success

  1. Complete the counting sequence from 1 to 1,000.
  2. Notice patterns in the count sequence, such as the repeating sequence of ones digits, that the tens digit changes every ten. numbers, and the hundreds digit changes every 100 numbers, etc.
  3. Use completed count sequence to reason about three-digit numbers and their relative value to a given number.

Tips for Teachers

  • There is no Target Task for this lesson to allow for students to have enough time to complete the full sequence from 0 - 1,000 and discuss patterns and observations about the numbers in the sequence.
  • Students will focus on skip-counting within 1,000 by 5s, 10s, and 100s in Lesson 11.

Lesson Materials

  • Blank Hundreds Chart (10 per group)
  • Tape — to attach sets of hundreds charts together vertically
